Norris Holds Off Verstappen to Win Thrilling Australian GP Opener and Take Early Championship Lead
MELBOURNE, Australia β Lando Norris has opened the 2025 Formula 1 season with a statement victory at the Australian Grand Prix, outlasting a chaotic race and a relentless Max Verstappen to claim his second career win β and his first-ever championship lead.
Starting from pole in damp conditions, Norris controlled the early stages of the race as the Albert Park Circuit gradually dried. But the weather turned again in the second half, creating the kind of unpredictable challenge that has undone McLaren in the past. This time, however, Norris and his team kept their composure.
βThis was amazing,β Norris said after stepping out of his McLaren MCL39. βA tough race, especially with Max behind me. The last two laps were stressful, but what a way to start the year.β
The 25-year-old Briton momentarily lost the lead after sliding onto the grass in the worsening conditions, an incident that also trapped teammate Oscar Piastri. But when Verstappen was forced to pit for intermediate tyres as rain intensified, Norris reclaimed P1 and never looked back.
Although Verstappen quickly closed the gap in the final laps β aided by a brief DRS window after a small mistake by Norris at Turn 6 β the McLaren driver held his line under pressure to seal a hard-fought victory.
βI donβt know, just drive, I guess,β Norris said when asked how he fended off the reigning champion. βMax was quick. I made one mistake and he got within DRS, which is probably worth a second around here. I had to check my mirrors more than I wanted to, but I stayed calm.β
The result marks the first time a driver not named Max Verstappen leads the championship standings since the 2022 Spanish Grand Prix. Norris credited the victory to lessons learned from costly mistakes in similarly tricky races last season, including Silverstone and Canada.
βWe got it wrong a lot last year,β he admitted. βItβs still only Round 1 of 24, but we learned from our mistakes. To not have a mistake that cost me anything today β I guess I can take a little credit for that.β
Piastri, meanwhile, was left to recover from his off-track excursion, while several other drivers β including Jack Doohan, Isack Hadjar, and Carlos Sainz β failed to finish after a dramatic multi-car crash just after the lights went out.
The McLaren win comes as a confidence boost for a team looking to re-establish itself as a consistent front-runner.
βMy weekend has been amazing from the get-go,β Norris said. βItβs not easy to put it all together, especially with pressure from Max and Oscar β theyβre hungry and want it just as badly. But I know what Iβm capable of.β
With 23 races still to come, including the next round in Japan, Norris is already looking ahead.
βItβs just Round 1. We need to go and do it again next weekend. A long season ahead β weβve just got to keep our heads down and keep pushing.β
