McLaren Fastest at Suzuka as Rookie Pressure Builds Ahead of Qualifying

Suzuka, Japan – The 2025 Japanese Grand Prix weekend is off to an eventful start at the iconic Suzuka Circuit, with McLaren asserting early dominance and rookies under the spotlight ahead of qualifying. As the third round of the Formula 1 season unfolds, the technical 5.807 km circuit has already begun to test the limits of precision and composure.

In a strong showing for the Woking-based team, Lando Norris topped the FP1 timesheets with a 1:28.529 lap, before teammate Oscar Piastri bettered it in FP2 with a 1:28.114, giving McLaren a clean sweep of Friday’s practice sessions.

The second session, however, was marred by multiple red flags and dramatic incidents, the most significant involving Alpine rookie Jack Doohan. The young Australian made heavy contact with the barriers midway through the session, bringing his running to a premature end. Thankfully, Doohan walked away unscathed—though the damage to his car was substantial.

Suzuka’s unforgiving layout, featuring sweeping high-speed corners like 130R and the Esses, leaves little margin for error, a point that became painfully clear for several drivers. With three rookies on the grid this season, including Doohan, the challenge of mastering one of F1’s most demanding circuits is being closely watched by fans and teams alike.

This weekend also marks a highly anticipated homecoming for Japanese driver Yuki Tsunoda. After being promoted to Red Bull Racing following the first two rounds, Tsunoda now has the rare opportunity to race for a top-tier team on home soil. His former seat at the Racing Bulls has been filled by fellow former rookie Liam Lawson, who will now look to make his mark in the midfield battle.

The Japanese Grand Prix will be contested over 53 laps, covering a total distance of 307.471 km. With FP3 and qualifying set to take place within the next 14 hours, all eyes are on how teams will dial in their setups—and whether the rookies can steady their nerves under increasing pressure.
